In 1994, King Harald V of Norway opened the gas supply to Hydro Aluminium Karmoy- one of Europe’s largest aluminum plants. This was also the opening of the Norwegian Industry to make use of natural gas. Today, natural gas is used in most major industrial businesses in need for stable supply of process heat. The gas has mainly replaced the heavy oil, and the feedback from users is very positive. In addition to competitive price, the gas has led to significant reductions in operating and maintenance costs. Companies can report that when they used the heavy oil, sometimes they had to spend a whole day to start up the burners after a shutdown. With the gas, they just push the start button – and everything works. A day of lost production is expensive. The profits on the environment and neighbours who experience fewer pollutants are also considerable.
